When describing the Ishapore 2A1, "Classics aren't made, they're the product of emotion and shared experiences resulting in a collective fondness for the subject article that leads to longevity and a timeless collector's piece."
Wow! Now that's a mouthful! Let me say it my way: Damn girl! That is one cool looking, accurate shooting, piece of history in a rifle that shoots one of my favorite rounds! Praise the Lord and Pass the ammunition because I love military rifles, wood stocks and things that go Boom! Contrary to what many might think the Ishapore 2A1 isn't a .308 conversion of a British Enfiled, according to Wiki, it's almost exactly a "British .303 caliber SMLE III in 7.62x51 with the exception of the distinctive “square” (10 or 12 round) removable magazine and the use of the buttplate from the 1A (Indian version of the FN FAL) rifle..." However, though it's inspired by the the Enfield, it was designed and produced following the Sino-Indian war as an entirely new rifle. Its steel barrel, strengthened for the higher pressure of the NATO 7.62x51 round and its front sight updated to 800m in order to account for the flatter trajectory of the heavier caliber. I'm always amazed at the simplicity of the older bolt action rifles. Top loading 10 round mag (also removable), flip up rear sight, simple to operate and very positive thumb lever safety and a pretty simple mechanical hammer and sweet, positive break trigger with a lot more finesse than one would expect.
There you have the beginnings of a young woman falling in love with an older man, (I mean historic rifle). From the first round that flew from the muzzle of the Ishapore, I hit exactly what and where I was aiming at, over and over and over again. I'm a classically trained iron sights girl, so I actually prefer them to fancy red dots and scopes, so it was love at first shot for me. The warmth of the wood, the character and age lines of the small dents and scratches, the firm driving home of the bolt as it picked up a round! I better stop... lest a girl embarrass herself going on and on about this rifle! Trust me, there are still plenty of the Ishapore 2A1 rifles out there at good prices, get one and own a sweet classic, you'll love it! - Anna
